Capernwray Dive School and PADI- a professional combination
DIVEMASTER AND INSTRUCTOR PROGRAMS
We offer the full range of professional level PADI qualifications. Please bear in mind that the purpose of these qualifications is to prepare you for a job within the diving industry. If this is your goal, then we offer what is acknowledged within the industry as the best training available. Being certified as an Instructor at Capernwray is recognised as a great opening to that dream job!
Remember that these are professional courses and unlike your diving education to date, the costs can be offset against the courses that you teach! In terms of price, you will find that the cost of your professional education in total will vary little from place to place-it is just sometimes packaged differently!
Divemaster
Divemaster is the first professional membership level available within PADI. As a Divemaster, you are entitled to charge for your services, offering guided diving or actually running some specific courses for qualified divers. As such, it is professional and vocational training i.e. we are in effect training you to do a job. All our Divemasters are trained via internship, which means that in effect they work with the instructors here and are involved with real students in training and in real Divemaster situations, rather than as part of a role playing exercise. The "down" side of this is (if there is one) is that our training takes a reasonable period of time. However this is significantly offset because the course is not conducted “full time” and hence it can fit in with other commitments, jobs etc.
The course itself involves instructor level theory, swimming stamina testing, skill circuits, problem solving exercises, rescue assessments and a mapping project. In conjunction, you will be in water, both in the pool and open water, assisting real students during their courses. We do not use trainee Divemasters as "dogs bodies", but include them into every phase of the training process, from paperwork, through to de-briefing.
Capernwray is the best venue to complete your instructor course. Our track record at Instructor exams and, more importantly in the industry in terms of people employed is second to none. We recommend that rather than completing a seven day IDC, you do a three day AI, followed at some time later by a four day OWSI. This is a far less stressful way to become a PADI Instructor, and as the learning is spread out, makes it far more effective and hence better value for your hard earned money! Speaking of money, remember that the fees for these programs entitle you to earn money from them! Our goal in these programs is to prepare you to be Instructors, not to pass an IE!

Assistant Instructor Course
This course is run over 3 days, and consists of seven Knowledge Development Sessions, a skill circuit, 2 confined water presentations, and 2 academic presentations and on open water session. It is a fairly intensive course!
Assistant instructors can teach elements of most PADI courses, normally under supervision of a PADI instructor. They can also conduct certain PADI programs, and teach non-diving specialities like Project Aware This makes an AI far more attractive to a prospective employer that a Divemaster.
There is a mandatory home study content for this course, which compromises Knowledge Reviews contained in the IDC Candidate Workbook. These are fairly extensive, so please allow time for their completion prior to the start date of the course.
Open Water Scuba Instructor Program
OWSI is the most sought after instructor qualification in the world. In order to achieve this, and to undertake an Instructor Exam (IE), it is necessary to undergo the 4-day OWSI program. During this, you will look at prescriptive teaching methods, teaching all the PADI courses (Rescue etc), more confined and Open Water teaching, an 800 metre swim using mask, fins and snorkel and a further skill circuit. In addition, we conduct a Rescue skills workshop and Adventures in Diving seminar.
The OWSI qualification will qualify you to teach all PADI diver programs, Open Water through to Divemaster. It will also allow you to attend Speciality Instructor courses. It is true that OWSI is the most common entry qualification to the diving industry.
The key difference between our OWSI program and most others is the level of emphasis that we place on preparing you to enter the diving industry as a dive professional. It is not simply a course to coach you through the exam, but concentrates on giving you the tips and techniques to be successful in the diving environment. As a result, you will “hit the ground running” and stand out from the crowd when you are seeking employment.
Instructor Exams (IE)
PADI hold IE’s at various venues around the world. A PADI Instructor Examiner will conduct the IE over 2 days, and they periodically use venues close to Capernwray.
Instructor Specialities and Master Scuba Diver Trainer Preparation
We offer all PADI Instructor Specialities, simply chose which ones you would like to do!
Emergency First Response Instructor Course
Emergency First Response Instructor programs are now open to anyone, and can provide an excellent way of generating a non-diving related income. They offer a very comprehensive and attractively packaged program that can be taught in any situation-allowing you to tap into the vast statutory First Aid market. All courses now also incorporate the Care for Children Instructor module.
DAN Instructor Programs
The program consists of an instructor Qualification Course (IQC) and then you can bolt on as many of the individual courses as you want.
IDC Staff Instructor Courses
Expands your teaching opportunity into Instructor Development and is a key step in increasing your skills and abilities. We offer a four day intensive IDCS program that concentrates on developing your abilities rather than the inevitable focus on the students undergoing the IDC as is typical of the auditing type course.
